Pitch gone wrong
A gopher ball is a pitch in baseball that gets hit for a home run—the batter "goes for" the seats.
The term is mildly derisive, implying the pitcher served up an easy target: He hung a curveball and it became a gopher ball.
Used mainly by commentators and fans rather than players themselves.
