got away

Eluded the pursuer

Got away means escaped or evaded capture: The thief got away before police arrived.

It extends to leaving a place, especially for rest or vacation: We got away to the mountains for a week.

To get away with something is to avoid consequences for a misdeed: He cheated on the exam and got away with it.

The dismissive get away! expresses disbelief.
