goonies

Awkward, foolish people

Goonies is informal for goons—thugs, enforcers, or dimwitted lackeys: He sent his goonies to rough up the competition.

The word gained wider currency from the 1985 adventure film *The Goonies*, about a group of misfit kids on a treasure hunt, giving it a nostalgic, affectionate connotation when referring to scrappy underdogs or close-knit friend groups.
