goldenberries

Husked tart berries

Goldenberries are small, round, orange-yellow fruits with a sweet-tart flavor, enclosed in a papery husk like a miniature lantern.

Native to South America, they're eaten fresh, dried, or in preserves: The trail mix had goldenberries and almonds.

Also called cape gooseberries or Peruvian ground cherries, though they're not true gooseberries or cherries.
