goldbeating

Flattening precious metal

Goldbeating is the craft of hammering gold into extremely thin sheets called gold leaf.

The gold is placed between layers of animal membrane or special paper and beaten repeatedly until it becomes translucent—thin enough to float on air.

The resulting leaf is used for gilding frames, domes, book edges, and decorative surfaces.
