going off
Starting to spoil
Going off describes something activating suddenly or explosively.
An alarm goes off when triggered; a bomb goes off when it detonates; a gun goes off when fired.
Food going off (chiefly British) is spoiling.
A person going off is losing their temper or launching into an impassioned rant: She really went off on him about the mess.
To be going off something (British) is to lose interest in it.
