gas lamps
Victorian street illumination
Gas lamps are lighting fixtures that burn natural gas or coal gas to produce illumination.
Before electric lighting became widespread in the early twentieth century, gas lamps lit streets, homes, and public buildings throughout Europe and North America.
Some cities still maintain historic gas streetlamps for their warm, flickering glow and nostalgic appeal.
The old neighborhood still has working gas lamps along its cobblestone streets.
