garden leave
Employment limbo period
Garden leave is a period when an employee who has resigned or been terminated is told to stay away from work while remaining on the payroll.
The arrangement keeps departing employees—especially those with access to sensitive information or client relationships—from immediately joining competitors: She's on garden leave until her contract expires in June.
Common in British corporate and legal contexts.
