gákti

A gákti is the traditional garment worn by the Sámi people of northern Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula.

It's a tunic-like coat, typically reaching to the knees, made of wool or reindeer hide and decorated with colorful bands, braiding, and buttons.

Design details—colors, patterns, collar shape—indicate the wearer's regional origin, family, and marital status.

The gákti is worn for ceremonies, festivals, and special occasions: She wore her grandmother's gákti at the wedding.
