funeral pall
Casket covering cloth
A funeral pall is a cloth draped over a coffin, casket, or tomb.
Traditionally black or purple velvet, often embroidered with religious symbols, the pall dignifies the deceased and conceals the casket beneath.
The word pall alone carries the same meaning and extends figuratively to anything that covers or darkens: A pall hung over the proceedings.
