fugue states
Identity-erasing mental episodes
Fugue states are episodes of amnesia in which a person loses awareness of their identity and may wander or travel, sometimes assuming a new identity.
The person appears functional but later has no memory of the episode.
The term borrows from musical fugue, suggesting themes that drift and return.
In casual use, fugue state describes any period of confused, automatic behavior: I was in such a fugue state after the breakup that I don't remember the whole month.
