fugitive slave acts
Escapee return laws
The Fugitive Slave Acts were two United States federal laws (1793 and 1850) requiring the return of escaped enslaved people to their enslavers, even from states where slavery was illegal.
The 1850 act was particularly harsh, compelling Northern citizens to assist in captures and denying alleged fugitives jury trials.
Opposition to these laws intensified antislavery sentiment and accelerated the path to the Civil War.
