freedom rider
Segregation bus challenger
A freedom rider was a civil rights activist in the early 1960s who rode interstate buses through the American South to challenge segregation.
The Freedom Rides tested Supreme Court rulings that had declared segregated public buses unconstitutional, deliberately provoking confrontation with local authorities and violent mobs: Freedom riders were beaten when they arrived in Birmingham.
