footpads

Historical pedestrian thieves

Footpads are the cushioned undersides of an animal's paws—the tough, leathery pads that absorb impact when dogs, cats, and other mammals walk.

The term also applies to protective or cushioning pads worn on human feet, or rubber feet attached to furniture legs to prevent scratching floors.

Separately, a footpad was a historical term for a robber who operated on foot rather than horseback: The lonely road was known for footpads and highwaymen.
