flying column

Rapid strike unit

A flying column is a mobile military unit designed to move quickly and operate independently, typically for raids, pursuit, or rapid response.

Unlike regular formations tied to supply lines and fixed positions, flying columns travel light and strike where needed: The commander dispatched a flying column to cut off the enemy's retreat.

The term became prominent during guerrilla conflicts, notably the Irish War of Independence.
