floor furnace
In-ground heat source
A floor furnace is a heating unit installed directly into the floor, with a metal grate flush with the surface.
Common in older homes, it draws cold air from below, heats it, and radiates warmth upward through the grate.
Unlike central heating, it warms only the immediate area: We stood over the floor furnace to warm up.
