flip flops

Backless summer footwear

Flip flops are casual, flat sandals held to the foot by a Y-shaped strap that passes between the big toe and second toe.

Named for the slapping sound they make against the heel when walking, they're associated with warm weather, beaches, and informal settings.

The term also describes a reversal of position or opinion, especially in politics: Critics accused the senator of flip-flopping on immigration.

As a verb, to flip-flop means to change one's stance abruptly or repeatedly.
