flight engineers
Cockpit systems monitors
Flight engineers are crew members responsible for monitoring and operating aircraft systems during flight.
They manage engines, fuel, hydraulics, pressurization, and electrical systems, working alongside pilots in the cockpit.
The role emerged when aircraft grew too complex for pilots alone to monitor, but automation has largely eliminated the position on modern commercial jets.
Flight engineers remain on older aircraft and some military planes.
