fire striker

Primitive ignition tool

A fire striker is a piece of steel struck against flint or similar hard stone to produce sparks for starting fires.

Before matches, this was the standard method of ignition—the striker, flint, and tinder were carried together in a tinderbox.

Modern versions use ferrocerium rods rather than steel: She scraped the fire striker to light the kindling.
