fire barrier
Heat-resistant partition
A fire barrier is a wall, floor, or other structural element designed to prevent fire from spreading between sections of a building.
Building codes require fire barriers around stairwells, elevator shafts, and between units in multi-family housing.
The term also applies to strips of fire-resistant material used in landscaping to slow the spread of wildfires: They cleared a fire barrier around the property.
