fiery cross

Flaming rallying sign

A fiery cross is a wooden cross set ablaze, historically used in Scotland as a signal to summon clans to battle.

In the United States, burning crosses became associated with the Ku Klux Klan as symbols of racial intimidation and terror, placed on the lawns of Black families and at Klan gatherings: They burned a fiery cross in front of the church.
