fielding error

Botched defensive play

A fielding error is a mistake by a defensive player in baseball or softball that allows a batter or runner to advance when they should have been put out.

The official scorer judges whether a play that should have been made with ordinary effort was mishandled—a dropped fly ball, a wild throw, a fumbled grounder.

Errors are tracked as a measure of defensive reliability: The shortstop committed two fielding errors in the fourth inning.
