dropped ball
Fielder's costly error
A dropped ball is a method of restarting play in soccer when the referee stops the game for reasons other than a foul or the ball going out of bounds—typically for an injury or interference.
The referee drops the ball to a player of the team that last touched it, and play resumes when it hits the ground.
Figuratively, a dropped ball suggests a fumbled opportunity or failure to follow through: Someone dropped the ball on the permits, and now we're behind schedule.
