fan theorist
Unofficial lore analyst
A fan theorist is someone who develops elaborate explanations or predictions about fictional universes—filling gaps in narratives, connecting obscure details, or speculating about hidden meanings.
The practice thrives in online communities devoted to TV shows, films, books, and video games: Fan theorists predicted the twist three seasons before it aired.
The term can be admiring or gently mocking, depending on whether the theories seem insightful or absurdly overreaching.
