fan film
Homemade franchise homage
A fan film is an amateur movie made by enthusiasts of an existing franchise—Star Wars, Star Trek, superhero universes—using those characters and settings without official authorization.
Fan films range from backyard productions to surprisingly polished work, distributed online rather than commercially: The fan film imagined what happened between Episodes III and IV.
Studios generally tolerate them as long as creators don't profit.
