false summits
Misleading high points
False summits are points on a mountain that appear from below to be the peak but reveal higher terrain once reached.
The phenomenon is common on ridgelines where perspective obscures what lies beyond.
Figuratively, a false summit is any apparent endpoint that turns out to be merely a stage: I thought the manuscript was done, but that was a false summit—the editor wanted major revisions.
