The true summit is the highest point of a mountain, as opposed to false summits that appear to be the top from below but reveal higher ground once reached.
Climbers may encounter several false summits before reaching the true summit.
The term extends to any genuine peak or endpoint after misleading partial achievements: After three rounds of revisions, we finally reached the true summit of the project.
