falling sensation
Sense of descent
A falling sensation is the visceral feeling of dropping through space, whether real or illusory.
It occurs during actual falls, on amusement park rides, or in the common experience of jerking awake just as you're drifting off to sleep—the body's startle response to a false signal that you're plummeting.
The sensation can also strike during anxiety or vertigo: My stomach lurched with that falling sensation.
