impossible stairs

Endless ascending illusion

Impossible stairs are a visual illusion depicting a staircase that appears to ascend or descend endlessly while returning to its starting point—defying physical reality.

The most famous example is the Penrose stairs, which inspired M.C.

Escher's lithograph *Ascending and Descending*.

The concept extends metaphorically to situations of futile effort: Trying to satisfy him is like climbing impossible stairs.
