fake handoff
Deceptive ball transfer
A fake handoff is a football play where the quarterback mimics giving the ball to a running back but keeps it, typically to deceive defenders and create opportunities elsewhere.
The running back sells the fake by acting as if carrying the ball.
The term extends to any deceptive transfer that doesn't actually occur: The magician's fake handoff fooled the audience.
