fabulation

Weaving fictional tales

Fabulation is the act of inventing or relating fantastical stories, often with the implication that the teller presents fiction as fact.

In literary criticism, it describes a mode of storytelling that embraces the artificial and imaginative over strict realism, celebrating narrative invention for its own sake.

The term can carry a negative connotation when applied to someone who habitually embellishes or fabricates: His account of the evening was pure fabulation.
