nonlinear plot
Time-jumbled narrative structure
A nonlinear plot presents events out of chronological order—through flashbacks, flash-forwards, parallel timelines, or fragmented sequences.
The technique creates mystery, mirrors how memory actually works, or reveals information strategically: The film's nonlinear plot gradually reveals that the narrator has been dead the whole time.
Contrast with linear storytelling, where events unfold in sequence.
