extranets

Selective external intranets

Extranets are private networks that allow controlled access to outside parties—typically business partners, suppliers, or customers.

Unlike intranets, which serve only internal users, extranets extend across organizational boundaries while remaining secured from the public internet: The company set up an extranet so vendors could check inventory levels directly.
