brideprice

Groom's family pays

Brideprice is payment made by a groom or his family to the bride's family upon marriage.

The practice, found across many cultures historically and still common in parts of Africa and Asia, compensates the bride's family for losing her labor and fertility.

Unlike a dowry, which flows in the opposite direction, brideprice goes from the groom's side to the bride's: His family paid a brideprice of twelve cattle.

Also spelled bride price or bride-price.
