engine tune-up
Motor optimization service
An engine tune-up is routine maintenance to restore optimal performance—traditionally replacing spark plugs, adjusting timing, and checking filters and fluids.
Modern computerized engines require fewer adjustments, so tune-ups now focus mainly on spark plugs, air filters, and diagnostic checks: The mechanic recommended a tune-up at 100,000 miles.
The term sometimes applies loosely to any general servicing.
