emotional support animals
Therapeutic pet designation
Emotional support animals are pets whose presence provides comfort and psychological benefit to people with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, or PTSD.
Unlike service animals, they require no specialized training—their therapeutic value comes simply from companionship.
In the U.S., they occupy a contested legal space: housing laws may require landlords to accommodate them, but airlines and businesses generally don't have to.
My therapist wrote a letter certifying my cat as an emotional support animal.
