emergency order
Urgent official command
An emergency order is a directive issued by a government official or agency to address an urgent situation, bypassing normal procedures: The governor signed an emergency order closing schools during the outbreak.
Emergency orders typically grant temporary powers—restricting movement, allocating resources, or suspending regulations—and expire when the crisis ends.
In legal contexts, an emergency order may also be a court ruling issued without the usual waiting period, as in cases of immediate danger: She obtained an emergency order of protection.
