electoral vote
Swing state prize
An electoral vote is a vote cast by a member of the Electoral College, the body that formally elects the President and Vice President of the United States.
Each state receives electoral votes equal to its total congressional representation, and in most states all electoral votes go to whichever candidate wins the popular vote there.
The phrase also refers collectively to a candidate's total: She won the electoral vote despite losing the popular vote.
