eco-grief

Climate loss despair

Eco-grief is the sadness, mourning, or sense of loss people feel in response to environmental destruction—species extinction, habitat loss, climate change, or the degradation of beloved landscapes.

Unlike general environmental concern, eco-grief emphasizes the emotional weight of witnessing ecological decline: She felt a deep eco-grief watching the coral reefs bleach.

The term acknowledges that environmental damage can produce genuine bereavement.
