early election

Accelerated ballot scheduling

An early election is one held before the scheduled date, typically when a government calls for a vote ahead of its term's end.

Parliamentary systems allow this when coalitions collapse or leaders seek a fresh mandate: The prime minister called an early election after losing support.

Also called a snap election.
