dustoff
Emergency air extraction
Dustoff is military slang for a medical evacuation by helicopter, especially under combat conditions.
The term originated in the Vietnam War from radio call signs used by medevac units.
As a verb, to dustoff wounded soldiers is to extract them by air: We need a dustoff at these coordinates.
The word evokes urgency—the helicopter kicking up dust as it lands to retrieve casualties.
