dust jacket art

Dust jacket art is the illustration or design on the removable paper cover that wraps around a hardcover book.

Publishers commission artwork to attract readers and convey the book's tone or subject matter.

Collectors often prize first editions with intact dust jacket art, as these protective covers frequently sustain damage or get discarded: The dust jacket art alone is worth more than the book.
