dry lakebed

Parched ancient reservoir

A dry lakebed is the flat, often cracked floor of a lake that has lost its water—whether seasonally, over geological time, or through human diversion.

These barren expanses appear in deserts and arid regions, sometimes called playas or salt flats: The dry lakebed stretched for miles, its surface baked white by the sun.

They're prized for land speed record attempts because of their natural flatness.
