drag line

Mining bucket crane

A drag line is a rope or cable used to pull something toward you, especially in excavation where a bucket is dragged back to the machine after being dropped.

In fishing, it's a line dragged through water.

Dragline also names the massive cranes used in strip mining, which swing buckets on cables to move earth: The dragline could remove fifty tons in a single pass.
