downtown core
Urban central district
The downtown core is the central business district of a city—the dense cluster of office towers, government buildings, shops, and transit hubs that forms its commercial and administrative heart.
The term is especially common in Canadian English: The new light rail connects the suburbs to the downtown core.
Core emphasizes this area as the nucleus around which the rest of the city radiates.
