double salt

Two salts, one crystal

A double salt is a crystalline compound formed when two different salts crystallize together in a definite proportion, creating a single substance with its own distinct properties.

Unlike complex salts, double salts dissociate completely into their component ions when dissolved in water.

Alum is a common example—potassium aluminum sulfate combines potassium sulfate and aluminum sulfate in one crystal structure.
