double-track

Parallel railway lines

Double-track refers to a railway line with two parallel tracks, allowing trains to travel in both directions simultaneously without waiting for oncoming traffic to pass.

As a verb, to double-track is to add a second track to an existing single-track line: They're double-tracking the commuter rail corridor to reduce delays.

The term extends metaphorically to doing two things at once or pursuing parallel approaches.
