dotted note
Duration-extended musical symbol
A dotted note in music has a dot placed after it, increasing its duration by half.
A dotted half note lasts three beats instead of two; a dotted quarter note lasts one and a half beats instead of one.
The dot adds rhythmic flexibility, creating syncopation or allowing notes to span across beat divisions: The melody's dotted rhythms give it a lilting feel.
