divided highway
Road with barrier
A divided highway is a road where opposing lanes of traffic are separated by a physical barrier such as a median strip, guardrail, or concrete wall.
This design prevents head-on collisions and generally allows for higher speed limits than undivided roads.
In British English, the equivalent term is dual carriageway.
The interstate is a divided highway, so you'll need to find an exit to turn around.
