direct objects
Verbs act upon
A direct object is the noun or pronoun that receives the action of a verb.
In She threw the ball, the ball is what gets thrown—the direct object.
Direct objects answer "what?" or "whom?" after an action verb: He read the book, They hired her.
Distinguished from indirect objects, which indicate to whom or for whom the action is done.
